| | Contemptuous | ] | OK, seeing as I have only a few people in my circle, some of whom are in Europe or the UK, this might be a moot point to raise but it's worth sharing the info in case someone is contemplating getting an iPhone in the U.S.
Long story short: after spending a couple of hours today talking to various CSR reps at AT&T, I discovered that existing AT&T customers who aren't eligible for a phone upgrade cannot buy the iPhone next month for $199. Before I switched to AT&T last week, I spoke with 2 different CSR's, each of whom assured me that the iPhone would be available to all AT&T customers, new ones and existing ones, for it's new, lower, advertised price. But in fact pre-existing customers ineligible for an upgrade will pay more (I heard $200 more; the AT&T reps could not/would not say), even though such customers will have to sign a new 2-year contract when they buy the iPhone (which will void any pre-existing contract). The AT&T CSR's were very cagey about this when I spoke with them, lots of conflicting info -- I think that the first-tier customer service people don't actually have any info right now about how the eligibility rules will apply to iPhone.
Fortunately I was in my 30-day trial period with AT&T, and I convinced the manager to void the activation fee they'd charged me, so I extricated myself without penalty from their contract. Just have to send the free phone back.
Verizon welcomed me back with open arms and no activation fee (and I pulled a little trick that will let me get out of the new 1 year contract whenever I want). So I think my little premature venture over to AT&T will cost me nothing (except time and frustration). I'm still probably going to get the iPhone, because I use macs and it'll be very easy to sync everything ... plus ... I just really really love Apple products. Am I silly? Quite possibly. But anyway, the point is to be careful with AT&T.
Like that's news ;) |

| | whatever they're playing right now ... is this Bon Jovi? | ] | I'm sitting in a cafe in Central Square with free internet, waiting for the farmer's market to open for business at 11:30. Hoping for strawberries. There's nothing like sweet, local, fresh strawberries. California imports simply cannot compare. |

| New Account, Nothing Much to Say |

| | Ambivalent | ] | I aspire to minimalism, but I own too many pairs of shoes, and indulge in far too many run-on sentences, to reasonably claim that I actually am a minimalist.
It seemed like a good idea to set up an account, the better to communicate with people I've encountered online, who seem to maintain journals here. But the truth is that I haven't much to say at all, not being given to journaling myself, and needing to invest in writing my dissertation so I can get on with life and a real job!
But here I am. Hello! |
